Conventional Medicine and
Therapeutic Body Work & Massage
Even though therapeutic bodywork & massage and conventional
medicine have opposite views on healing, they belong together. As
black and white complement each other to "fill-in" the blanks, so
does conventional medicine's segmented view and the circular view
of therapeutic bodywork. (Other alternative health care approaches
can be included here: homeopathy, reiki, chiropractic, yoga, Tia Chi',
acupuncture, reflexology, meditation).
The diagnosis and screening provided by conventional doctors is
great to alert to the beginning of health issues and possible problems.
And even when a diagnosis isn't reached the information learned from
the process of elimination is helpful. Once a person's health level is
known, using softer treatments and prevention methods that work
with the body's natural rhythm (such as therapeutic bodywork &
massage), can lead to and assist the body back to a healthy state and,
best of all, in keeping it there.
From the view of a therapeutic body worker, something as simple
as a pulled adductor muscle (inner thigh muscle) can be addressed
by releasing the tightness and reducing the scarring that occurred from
the trauma. Assisting the lateral rotators and glutels (butt and hip
muscles) after a hip replacement surgery by reducing swelling,
scarring, and tightness while the patient builds muscle back plus
stretching to gain and keep flexibility is reachable. Even balancing the
overly fearful agoraphobic's emotions with sutble energy holds plus
calming a heightened nervous system with vibration is possible.
All recoveries are without treatments that cause side effects,
which is often found in traditional treatments. Besides being easier on
the body, the basic energy exchange from touch alone promotes
healing. This simple effect from touch is similar to premature new-
borns receiving daily touch. These newborns thrived over those that
didn't receive daily touch. Plus, an individual can gain a higher aware-
ness of themselves, their bodies, and what's needed to care for it.
After fifteen years in this business, I've seen a variety
of health issues that more often than not, were benefited from softer
treatments and preventive methods (such as therapeutic bodywork &
massage) in conjunction with a traditional doctor's diagnosis or pro-
cess of elimination.
